Your Piece has Value
One of the easiest ways to become totally overwhelmed is to look at all the needs in your world. There’s so many people that authentically need help. So many devastated places that have a long journey to wholeness.
It’s an age-old question: “What can one person do?”
The first answer to that question is: One person can’t do it all. God spoke of the “Body of Christ” because we were meant to represent Jesus as a team. Yet it’s so easy to take on every good cause that surrounds us.
Jesus is always our example and we see this in Him. He clearly said, “I only do what I see My Father doing. I only say what I hear My Father saying.” (John 5:19-20)
“What are my Kingdom Assignments” is not a functional question.
It’s a relational one.
God loves walking with us, talking with us about how He sees us in this life. He adores our faith as we trust His ways, which are rarely consistent, though He is unchanging. So why is “What am I supposed to do?” such a puzzling question at times? I think one of the primary challenges is this:
We’ve assigned a value system to what we do in life that God doesn’t share.
Jesus said that some of those well-known by others would not be so well known by Him at the end of the age. While they’re presenting their resumes of accomplishments done in God’s name, Jesus is showing them an eternal door… and it’s not to heaven (Matthew 7:22-24). And apparently, it’s not just a few. Those verses say “many will say to Me on that day…” Yikes.
The reason these spectacular actions didn’t have value wasn’t because they weren’t spectacular enough. It was because of an absence of relationship.
Jesus said to those guys in Matthew 7, “I never knew you.” The literal meaning is basically saying, “You knew a lot about Me, but we weren’t dear friends who really knew each other’s hearts.”
Maybe you’ll write a book, create a podcast or ministry. But just be careful to not make those hallmarks of official value to God.
Don’t discount your contribution just because it’s not very visible.
Your piece matters.
Your piece’s value isn’t in size or number, but that it comes from God’s heart, through your heart to encourage, heal and minister to the hearts of others.
It’s like the parable of the old man walking along the seashore who sees a young boy throwing things back into the ocean. As he gets closer, he realizes that they are beached starfish who will soon die.
He questions the wisdom of the boy’s mission. “There’s too many of them to make a difference.”
The boy only pauses momentarily to look at the starfish in his hand, then throws it as far into the ocean as he can.
“It made a difference to that one.”
You make a difference. Every day in ways small and large. Don’t doubt the value of your piece in the eyes and heart of Jesus. When you do whatever you do to the least because you’re living as He would live, you’ve done it to Him.
That’s your greatest Kingdom Assignment of all.
