The Power of Community Identity

As young children, our sense of self is most influenced by our immediate family. As we mature into adolescence, the groups and communities we’re a part of begin to take a more prominent role in who we see ourselves to be. As with all life experiences, this can have a positive impact or one that defines us in ways that God doesn’t.

Jesus consistently emphasized the value of community. He demonstrated it in ministering with a team that became His friends.  The book of Acts are the stories of early Christian communities and Paul writes to not forget to gather together. Why?

Because God never meant for us to try to grow in isolation. He understands that community is vital as a practice ground, a place of encouragement and that together, we always see more!

We also gain a sense of our identity through the communities we are a part of, hopefully in a positive way where we feel truly seen, heard and valued for our true self.

True grace-based communities strengthen our ability to remain true to who we really are when the pressures of life come.  When we are drawn to act outside of our true self, it can be really helpful to remember: β€œWait, I’m part of a people who…”


So, who are β€œour people” in life?  What are the values of the groups we identify with?  That’s really important to know because values tell you what you can expect when you’re together. Values only begin with a statement. Each one should have an experience that you remember.

This is one of the areas we explore in both our Navigating Grace Spaces and Identity Explorations. Who are the communities that we’ve identified with and how have they defined us? Most importantly, is that how God sees us?

Discovering New Friends

This is a shout out to all my fellow GraceSpacers. Make the most of the community, even if it seems challenging at first.

I was so excited to first join Allison and all of you on the great adventure to MORE of Jesus in my life. After finishing up my first two classes, Allison asked who would like to join in the smaller group setting of Explorations. Of course, I always want more, so I said β€œYes!”

Now that I said yes, my battle began.When first meeting the two amazing, beautiful women in our small group, I knew for sure that they were more qualified, gifted, brilliant and full of abilities I didn't possess. I disqualified myself before even getting to know them! Because I'm learning to step into my Grace Spaces and receive help, I admitted my feeling of disqualification.

Allison made a comment that stuck with me, "You fit in anywhere you want to." Aha moment!

So the ladies and I set up a time and date to Zoom outside of our regular meeting. As we progressed, more of my defenses came down until a wondrous thing happened: we became close friends!

Our times became precious, valuable and a treasure. Our intimacy grew as the Holy Spirit moved into our open conversation and our hearts were revealed.

As we have continued our calls after Explorations finished, the Lord has given us an open space that is safe to share our thoughts and feelings, doubts, and lop off old religious, outdated ideas. A place to encourage each other, pray and to speak LIFE into each other.

The great disqualification I felt was a lie and it was replaced with a truth:I can do all things in Christ Jesus and by His Spirit, I can step in, move forward and accept His bold, amazing love as my own. After all, it's a gift!
