Dear friend of Grace Spaces,

In this season of Thanksgiving, we're so grateful for you and taking the time to share what we been exploring. I hope you'll be encouraged and inspired!

This month, you'll discover how just one look from Jesus and others can bring transformation and gratitude. We also have some inspirational short stories to share and examples of how our members are creatively expressing their true selves.

Our fall sessions are coming to a close and once again, we're giving thanks for the beautiful Grace Space team members who have given their time and heart to traveling through "Navigating Grace Spaces" and our "Identity Exploration."

God is so faithful and I'm grateful that you're in our community,

The Look That Transforms

Some of the most powerful transformation experiences in our lives come when we feel we’re at our worst and a friend, a loved one or even a stranger looks at us with kindness and compassion.

No lectures. No letting you know they saw this coming. Just a loving look on their face that says, β€œI see you. I know who you really are. I know this is hard but I’m glad to be with you, right here, right now.”

Personally, I think it was that kind of look that saved Peter on his worst day. Luke 22:61 says that as he was frantically denying his dear friend, Jesus looked at him. And one day I wondered: what was that look? I realized that it couldn’t be disappointment or surprise. Jesus knew it would happen. So, what was the look on Jesus’ face?

I think it was love. Love and compassion for His friend because He knew this was going to rock Peter’s world. A tornado of shame would threaten to take him out just like it tries to take us.

Who would be kind or good to us when we’re struggling? We’ve all had people that weren’t like that with us. But God isn’t like people. He remembers how hard it is to be human and has compassion, grace and mercy (Hebrews 4:15-16). He knows goodness and kindness calms the shame storm (Romans 2:4).

That’s where we’re transformed, in the look of grace from God or one of His friends. God’s face becomes a mirror in which we can see ourselves as compassionately as He does - and hope rises. Growing confidence in the truth of grace, mercy and help brings peace that passes our understanding.

God even created us with mirror neurons in our brains. From birth, we’re meant to look into the faces of those who love us to understand that we are safe, we are loved and we belong. Sometimes people didn’t do that for us, so it’s challenging to receive it now - but we’re learning and we’re practicing in our coaching teams, our worship and our everyday lives.

You are safe with God. You are loved. You belong in His family. And you will continue to look more and more like Him because you’ve seen who you really are in His eyes.

β€œBut we all with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 3:18

I Hear You!

When is the last time you remember being cared about?

One of the keys that I discovered in Grace Spaces that unlocked revelation for me is learning that God’s response in my time of need (and I am always in need) is: I see you. I know you. I understand this is hard. I’m glad to be with you. I can do something about this.

Through this I have learned to listen to myself, and hear myself. Not the old self that I was accustomed to listening to, but my true self, the self that God also listens to and hears.

In my first week of Grace Spaces I decided it was time to listen, to really hear myself and what I found was a beautiful sense of self; full of love, kindness, and compassion, strong in tenderness.

From that space, I wrote a love letter to myself. I learned what self-care was for me and that is I care about myself. I care about myself because I see me, I hear me, I know me, I understand things are hard for me and the Holy Spirit is with me and is doing something about it.

As I have spent time letting this wash over me, I am learning and experiencing that I am seen, heard, understood, not alone and that Holy Spirit is there to show me the way through.

I am also learning who I truly am. Since I was created in God's image and if this is who He is for me then it is also who I can show up as for others. The more I allow myself to be seen by Him, releasing the shame, condemnation, lies; the more I recognize sign posts (which we also learn about in Grace Spaces); the more clearly I see myself; then the more clearly I see God and others.

Activation: Remember Interactive Gratitude

Grace Space team members learn the power of Interactive Gratitude as part of their coaching. It’s not just remembering to give thanks daily. It’s also pausing to allow God to share with us what He is thankful for too!

A thankful heart blesses Him! Take time in your thanksgiving to receive His affirmation and appreciation of who you are to Him. It fuels our joy!
