The Challenges of Presence

Awareness is always our starting placeβ€”awareness that we are in a grace space and also the awareness of who God will be for us and how He is with us. During our busy holiday season, it helps to have that extra assurance of Jesus as Immanuel, β€œGod with us.”

But sometimes our expectation of His presence is different than how He shows up. Our minds know He is with us, but we might not feel we are experiencing itβ€”though shame often prevents us from saying it out loud. But Jesus knows we desire His closeness because He gave us that desire!

Most of us have a sincere desire to experience the presence of God, but we may also have an expectation of what that will look like that may or may not be accurate.


Remember that struggle is always a signpost. So if there’s a struggle around your experience of the presence of God in a grace space, simply recognize it and give yourself grace. Become curious and exchange a β€œwhy” question for a β€œwho” and β€œhow” question: 

Father, Jesus and Holy Spirit, who do You want
to be for me today?

How do You want to walk with me? 


Since we’re on an ever-upward journey (Philippians 3:14), every higher place requires a greater awareness that God is with us in this differentlandscape. He’s waiting with a new experience of who He is as Immanuel, β€œGod with us,” even in the holiday hustle and bustle.

When it comes to His presence, always remember:

It’s not about accomplishment. 

It’s about companionship.

In revising the Grace Spaces book, a new β€œcompass” for navigating our grace spaces emerged: The Compass of Presence. It expands on our previous compasses of joy and quiet, but in a very different way. Here’s what we’ll cover:

  • How God is With Us - Why is Immanuel one of Jesus’ names and how do our expectations of His presence impact our ability to recognize His presence?

  • God with Us in Joy - What is the actual experience of β€œthe joy of the Lord is my strength?” What challenged Jesus’ joy? What challenges ours and how does He want to be with us in those times?

  • God with Us in Community - The Father, Jesus and Holy Spirit are a community that we are invited to join! How does God want to fulfill the desires for belonging, acceptance and safety that He gave us?

  • God with us in Quiet - How is God with us when He isn’t using words? What are the signposts of His presence when He is silent?

  • God with us in Hardship - How did Jesus experience the Father’s presence on His toughest days and how can we learn to recognize Him in ours?

WHO IS THIS GROUP FOR?

Women who are veterans of a previous Grace Spaces Group Coaching team or women that I’ve personally coached who have a basic understanding of what a β€œgrace space” is. 

WHEN: 

GROUP 1: Fridays 11:00 am - 12:30 pm PST  January 17 - February 14th 

GROUP 2: Saturdays 9:00 am-10:30 pm  PST  January 18 - February 15th

(5 sessions total)
